Did you know that it was a daughter who pushed for the recognition of a day dedicated just to Dad? In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington was listening to a sermon on Mother’s Day, which, at the time, was just becoming an established holiday, and thought it was time to honor the hard work of all dads too. Her father was a Civil War Veteran and had raised 6 children on his own after the mother died in childbirth. This idea was supported by the local religious leaders and the first “Father’s Day” was celebrated on June 19, 1910. It became an official holiday in the US in 1972 under President Nixon, who signed legislation designating the 3rd Sunday in June “Father’s Day”.
